Thought for Food

Thanks Gifa!

I know. I'm supposed to stop posting video clips harvested from youtube.

But play along for a few minutes, it might be a fun exercise.

The original:

The should've been novelty cover that totally eclipsed the original:

And the absurd:

That last one seems prone to disappearing, but a search on "sad kermit" will probably do the trick.

Useless crap.

The perfect gift for anyone you know that's had a hard time learning how to drive a manual transmission...

and has transparent hands.

The LED shift knob.

473mg Omega 3!

Or so says the little graphic on the side of my jar of pickled herring.

Marketing must be such a weird business.

"We need to get some mileage on the pickled herring account! Go think up a strategy to move that product!"

Exotic Birds.

so I'm trying to clean my apartment in a way more than just "push everything closer to the edges", so tonight's project was organizing my movie collection.

Alphabetical didn't make any sense, by director seemed iffy, and I have enough things that don't cleanly fit into a genre, so I went and made up my own.

So I have things arranged by categories like "Terry Gilliam", "Braindead Action", "Zombies" and "Bruce Campbell"

I tried to arrange the sections for the smoothest flow, which led to some inductive leaps like "Doctor Who" -> "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" -> "Red Dwarf" -> "Mr. Bean"

But, it's not like I'll ever have to explain why "True Romance" and "Killing Zoe" are in the same section to anyone, anyhow.

New theory

So due to some ill-conceived timing, I ended up grabbing dinner at Denny's tonight.

Haven't eaten there in years, and I made the mistake of walking in hungry.

Of course, not long after I left, I felt like I was teetering over the precipice of being violently ill.

So here's the new theory: Much less vomit would be spilled after a night of drinking and debauchery if it were less popular to visit such establishments as part of the evening's activities.

Seriously, I was totally sober, and even I felt like spewing afterward.

And now, some hours later, the indigestion...

Hey, I can see my house from here!

television surrogate.

It dawned on me tonight (for those that it wasn't yet obvious for), that I've been using youtube as a television surrogate.

At least I tend to be less passive about it, but it does explain why I sit here watching videos of Steve Albini reviewing distortion pedals:

(be sure to look for Big Black stuff on there. The Touch & Go 25th anniversary show footage is pretty good stuff.)

No, really. Check out Big Black. And maybe Rapeman or Shellac if it's on there.

If you don't know who Steve Albini is, maybe it's time to learn. something. about. him.

So after posting the Fugazi video last night, I got a message from someone thanking me for cluing them in (although they did claim to be unhip. In my response, I informed them that the footage was nearly 20 years old.)

So, this one's for you, anonymous internet person, more Fugazi (and only 10 years old this time!)

(I promise I'll stop posting youtube videos for a little bit. Maybe. Well, I'll try.)

waiting room.

I know, I know, stop posting crap from youtube.

But this just struck me as so completely surreal that I just couldn't help it. Keep an eye on the general audience behavior. Been a long time since I've seen a show with that sort of vibe. Maybe I live in the wrong area.

Clearly we are safer now.

Leave it to the local authorities to keep the date rape drug off our airlines.

Hey, I'm trying to populate my RSS reader with some better content, and to be honest, I've not really thought about RSS since (holy $#@!) 1999, when I wrote my own RSS reader of sorts

So I went and checked out all the blogs I usually read, and added those feeds, as well as a handful of news sites, but if there's some hidden nugget of endless glee that I probably wouldn't otherwise know about, by all means, tell me in the comments.

EDIT: wow. I'm glad I keep comment moderation on. I just got my first spam comment "auf Deutsch"

And here's one for us insomniacs to think about:

Why should we have 8 hours' sleep?

What the world needs...

Is fewer designers of cell phones and PDAs and portable mp3 players, and more of the Mark Pauline variety.

By way of consumatron by way of consumerist

Tuesday, April 17, 2007

one year later.

Oh, look. it's been a year.

So what's changed?

I sort of stopped cooking, and instead largely live off Trader Joe's salads and sundry microwavables now.

I started drawing again.

I've been reading a lot more.

I'm trying to stay active with the blog.

Heck, I'm even trying to twiddle around with music again.

And I know that next year will be here before I know it.

I am not a vlogger.

But I do occasionally make stuff.

You know, one of the greatest feelings is when I can expose somebody else to a thing they might enjoy.

Maybe it leads to further consumption, but there's something to be said for saying "Hey, I dig this, maybe you might too." and it turns out they find out about something they'd otherwise not have seen.

I'm just sayin', is all.

For example,

So a few days ago, I was feeling stressed out and depressed, so as I'm prone to do, I made something.

It was this:

Being a little goofy sometimes takes my mind off the usual daily crap. Posted it on the ORG and forgot about it.

Now, under most circumstances, that's all there is. But about half an hour ago, I was perusing through my youtube account to see what sort of viewership my crap's been getting (If I get 3 hits, I feel like John Grisham!), and I found this video's view count was at 18,400.

I sure hope this isn't my 15 minutes of fame. I think I could've done better with it.

Things to see.

Here's a few things that if you've not seen, perhaps you should:

Working for the Man

Spinning Into Oblivion

Ian Mackaye testifies:

Maybe you should see this too.

Hey! Quick! Give me an idea!

I said I'd figure out to do something with this space, and darnit, I'm trying.

Today's idea comes from Viscous Platypus, "Robots! From the future! with hats."

It's hard to write about the future. Not knowing what comes next is only natural, of course, but here we are in 2007, and I still have no flying car. Sure, I could cop out and talk about how I could dig up my old Lego set tomorrow, build some robot, and put a hat on it. Or I could do it five minutes from now, so long as it's after I've finished this. Is the focus the robot, the future, or the hat?

Would've thought that by now they would've had more robots. Sure, there's the robotic assembly line. There's the discontinued robot pet. The proof of concept. The fiction. The fiction. The fiction. Ok, maybe not that last one.

But let's talk about the fiction. The believable fiction. The sort that we might see. In "The Diamond Age", Neal Stephenson spent a lot of time thinking about some of the likely robots of the future, the nanobots. Even to the point of conceptualizing nanobot warfare, and the resultant smog of the carnage. Probably too small for the hats, and the nanohat is probably just absurd. The robot, the future, or the hat?

Everything2 isn't much help on the subject.
Google just offers nonsense.

Turns out, Digg has the answer. The future of robotics involves a crimson fedora.

But this is just one idea, and one path to follow. Maybe you've got another idea (comment!), maybe you've got a different perspective (comment!)

Think about it.

But I did make this.
